LPN Travel Nurse

If you are a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and are willing to travel then the opportunity for great LPN jobs increases dramatically.  LPN travel nurse jobs offer an exciting opportunity to work at prestigious medical facilities, earning a great salary, cashing in on generous bonuses, and in many cases, living in free accommodation supplied by the company.

Once you’ve gained your LPN qualification and necessary experience and assuming you still want to travel you will need to sign up to various travel companies who staff LPN‘s.  Check out the world wide web for sites that allow you to register for your personal profile, including details about yourself and your qualifications online and this profile will then be distributed to many of the relevant companies who will put you onto their books.  Some of the best staffing companies operate this way so don’t worry about using these distribution services.

Remember there are an enormous number, and growing, of LPN jobs waiting for you at many of the country’s top hospitals, medical facilities, nursing and care homes and clinics across the country.  You can indeed fit your career to your desire to travel.  It is for this reason that becoming an LPN travel nurse is so popular with so many newly qualified LPN’s.  It is truly a great way to work, especially when you are young and time is on your side.  For instance if you don’t like somewhere, or are not enjoying the work at a particular medical facility you can take the skills and experiences you have gained and move on to a new location.

If you are concerned about the application to be an LPN travel nurse process then you should remember that most recruiters are aware of this and as a result do make themselves readily available to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

Another way of finding out about LPN travel jobs is again to look online as there are many forums and bulletin boards which advertise jobs in specific locations.  Really, the sky’s the limit.

LPN Travel NurseAs an LPN travel nurse you can often go where LPN jobs are most in demand.  As a result you can often command wages at the upper end of the scale for LPN employment.  This means that sometimes you might even earn in excess of $40,000 per annum of $20 per hour.  To get the really high paying LPN travel nurse jobs you will likely need a minimum of two years nephrology experience, be reliable, pass a drug screening test and consent to a background check.

As a general rule, as you will not necessarily be used to the area you travel to when you start your role you should have good interpersonal skills as it will be important that you quickly get on with your co-workers at your new location.  This is not necessary but obviously will enhance your enjoyment at your employment and it should be something you consider before committing to the lifestyle of the LPN travel nurse.

If you still think you can handle it then the lifestyle, variety of jobs, level of pay and career opportunities in LPN employment will be greatly enhanced.

LPN Schools Selection Criteria

If you’ve decided to pursue a nursing career then the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) qualification may well be the best career path for you. You should therefore look for an LPN school in which to enroll and start the qualification program.

At this point it is worth noting that if you live in the states of California or Texas then it is routine to refer to the Licensed Practical Nurse qualification as the Licensed Vocational Nurse, or LVN qualification. In almost all aspects the roles are equivalent. In the main references will be made here to LPN schools, but these might just as easily be referred to as LVN schools. The make up of the LPN program and LVN program is essentially the same, so consider a reference to an LPN school as equivalent to an LVN school and you will not go too far wrong.

LPN schools provide both educational resources and career planning resources for students who want to pursue a lifelong career in the field, and typically take between one and two years to complete. An important ability that all LPN schools should be able to demonstrate is to show you how an LPN works to provide direct patient care while working under the direction of Registered Nurses (RN’s) and doctors. But LPN schools also provide you with classroom tuition as well as hands-on training for you to get the necessary breadth of learning that you will require to become a licensed practical nurse.

If you are a prospective LPN student then you should use the factors set out below to be able to systematically evaluate all the relevant factors when coming to a decision about what is your preferred choice of LPN school (or LVN school):

The Size Of The LPN School

When determining the best location for your LPN schooling you should give some consideration to the size of the LPN nursing school. There are advantages and disadvantages to large and small LPN schools alike.

LPNLarger schools for LPN will almost always have a larger selection of learning programs and study options for you to choose from. A smaller school for LPN may be less capable of delivering a wide choice of curriculum, but they can still be a great choice of LPN school because in order to compete despite their lack of breadth of courses they tend to concentrate their efforts on providing good levels of student access to the staff of the faculty allowing knowledge to transfer effectively. These different types of approach suit some students more than others.

Some LPN schools are run as online LPN schools and with these the size of the school is less of a critical factor as most of the study is done in isolation or by working very closely with your personal tutor. The online LPN school may be very much to the liking of some individuals who for instance have committed family lives, or maybe if they are continuing to work whilst studying.

How You See Your LPN Career Developing?

Is the program run by the LPN institute a component of a wider nursing qualification program allowing you to move naturally onto a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN)? Schools which offer this sort of flexibility if you decide to pursue additional qualifications later may well be the best choice for you.

The Ratio Of Students To Teachers At The LPN School

During the clinical training phase of your LPN qualification the ratio of students to teaching staff can be an important factor. Most often low student teacher ratios provide the best quality education. Again as noted above the online LPN schools tend to operate in such a way that you get individual tutor support and therefore the ratio of students to teachers may not be as important a factor.

Online nursing schools do seem to have advantages over conventional schools but there will continue to be a demand for conventional LPN schools simply because a great number of students enjoy going to school to study.

The Clinical Phase Run By The LPN school

The clinical phase of LPN programs is often critical. The better LPN schools, or LVN schools will ensure that each student receives more than just the minimum level of clinical experience in all training areas. Prospective students should look for time spent directly with patients which is one of the most important criteria in the role after qualification. If the LPN school or LVN school can’t demonstrate this then there is a good chance that newly qualified LPN’s will not be adequately prepared for their LPN jobs. One sensible manner in which to evaluate this is to try to talk with some of the current students at the school you are considering. Or if that is not possible then it may be a good idea to look up the student alumni and try to talk to students who have graduated in the past to try to get a sense of whether their experiences at the school prepared them for their subsequent jobs.

The LPN Qualification Rates

It almost goes without saying that you should look to pick a school that has a high pass rate of the State Board of Nursing examinations. If the LPN nursing school does not produce a sufficient quantity of suitably qualified LPN’s then you should question why. High pass rates are usually a good sign of the quality of both the program and the school.

Assistance With Financial Matters And The Availability Of Personal Tuition

Personal tuition and assitance by the schools with students financial affairs can vary quite widely from one school to another so you would do well to research this prior to applying to enroll in the school.

Graduates of LPN schools can also pursue careers as a registered nurse or further their career in the health and medical field to work as a physician, surgeon or doctor.

As a qualification in its own right the LPN program is well worth pursuing at it will lead you to be able to take advantage of the LPN job opportunities that are growing rapidly in today’s employment markets. But LPN employment may well not be your ultimate objective. You may well wish to go on to an RN or BSN qualification and further your career options that way. In this case the best place to start is the LPN qualification and to look at LPN schools with the objective of enrolling straight away.

The Best LPN Programs

If you are interested in becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), which is also known as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the states of California and Texas then you need to do some research into the subject of an LPN program (or an LVN program).

The LPN Program

The LPN program is designed to enable people to train, learn and gain experience in becoming an LPN.  The LPN qualification is a starter qualification on the nursing ladder.  In order to get started on this career path therefore you need to participate in one of the many LPN programs available.  In order to give you some form of monetary encouragement it may interest you to know that in 2006 the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced in their findings that the average annual salary for a graduate of online LPN programs, or online LVN programs was roughly $30,000 to $40,000 per annum. This figure equates to approximately $15-$20 per hour.  This means that the qualification is well worth pursuing as not only do LPN jobs pay well but the LPN employment market is also looking buoyant, being forecast to grow at up to 14% per annum in the run up to 2016.

There are a number of different ways you can access an LPN program.  Perhaps the easiest and cheapest is via local technical schools, junior colleges, community colleges, and vocational schools.  A recent occurrence is that there are many online LPN programs now being offered as competition for new students increases.  In addition, there are a number of private schools which have established LPN nursing programs.  The exact length of time that the LPN program will take does ultimately depend upon the particular LPN nursing program selected and this should be something you consider when making your decision.

LPNThe typical LPN program will take between one and two years to complete.  Although the online LPN programs are usually at the shorter end of this scale, more often lasting only one year.  There are two broad parts to the LPN program.  There is the classroom, or book learning part.  Then there is the supervised practical experience part for which the trainee LPN must spend some time undertaking.

Newcomers to the subject might believe that all LPN programs, whether they be a community college LPN program, an online LVN program or other online LPN programs are created equally.  This is not true, so knowing which LPN program to select is crucially important and may effect the development of your career later on.

Online LPN Programs

Many people are lured into taking online LPN programs.  There are various reasons for this but perhaps the most common one is that the online LPN program, or online LVN program does not require its students to go to class everyday.  This clearly makes it easier for someone to work while studying on the LPN nursing program.  This is not to criticize these online LPN programs at all.  They offer flexibility and adaptability that has not been available in previous years.  However, you should not be under any misapprehension.  The practical part of any LPN program is essential, and as a general rule, the LPN program or LVN program that devotes a significant portion to practical experience is usually superior to one that offers less.

Finding The Right LPN Program Or LVN Program

Finding the right school that offers the best or most appropriate online LPN programs may well be quite tricky.  At the very least you should make it a priority to enquire of current students their impressions and experiences on the online LPN program.  This is to assist you in trying to determine the quality of their training experiences and providing evidence to support your decision making process.  You should also make particularly sure that the online LPN programs you are considering are indeed offering a genuinely accredited LPN program.  There would be few things worse than to find that your hard work and time spent had been wasted.

Nowadays most schools that offer an LPN program or LVN programs actually provide flexible class hours including running training sessions at weekend classes or evening classes.  This is almost certainly in response to the competition for students that online LPN programs have created.  Two things should be noted however.  Many schools nowadays run both a conventional LPN program and also an alternative online LPN program.  The reason for offering the online LPN program alternative is because working adults can become licensed practical nurses in a relatively short period of time.  In addition, the flexibility of the online LPN program, or the online LVN program means that students are much more able to manage their time easily, possibly to combine work or family commitments.

If you have the flexibility to take full time LPN nursing programs then you might also be interested that a growing number of hospitals and even universities are also providing online LPN programs.  These may have an advantage as they can clearly offer a greater mix of practical experience, but more importantly the LPN program may be a precursor to an LPN job at the particular hospital or university afterwards.

As a point of reference the sort of subjects that you will be required to undertake on your LPN program, or also on LVN programs includes:

  • physiology,
  • pediatrics,
  • anatomy, and
  • first aid

Some of these subjects will be a compulsory part of your LPN program, even if you are studying on an online LPN program.

After completing one of the online LPN programs you may decide that you want to further your education and become a Registered Nurse (RN).  Finishing any of the online LPN programs will enable you to be working and be on your way towards earning a substantial salary.  However you should be under no illusions.  Online LPN programs are rigorous and require hard work and determination.  The reward, in the end, perhaps the thing that makes all the hard work really worth it is that LPN programs help nurses to qualify so that they can learn how to help other people.
